In a small Javanese village, there lived a young hunter named Jaka Tarub. He was known for his skills with a bow and arrow and spent most of his days exploring the nearby forest in search of game. One fateful day, while venturing deep into the woods, he stumbled upon a beautiful sight—a group of seven nymphs known as "bidadari" bathing in a crystal-clear river.
Mesmerized by their ethereal beauty, Jaka Tarub couldn't tear his eyes away. He watched in awe as they laughed and played in the water. Unable to resist the temptation, he quietly approached their clothes, which they had left on the riverbank. Taking one of the garments belonging to a nymph named Nawang Wulan, he hid it behind a tree.
When it was time for the nymphs to return to the heavens, they discovered that Nawang Wulan's clothes were missing. Panic filled their eyes as they realized they couldn't fly back without her garment. In distress, they searched everywhere but to no avail. Desperate, the nymphs flew away, leaving Nawang Wulan behind.
Hidden from their view, Jaka Tarub watched as Nawang Wulan tearfully wandered the riverbank, searching for her lost clothes. Overwhelmed by guilt, he revealed himself and handed her the hidden garment. Touched by his kindness, Nawang Wulan expressed her gratitude and offered to marry Jaka Tarub and live among humans.
Jaka Tarub and Nawang Wulan's life together was filled with love and happiness. They had a son whom they named Raden Bagus, and their days were spent in tranquility. However, as time passed, Jaka Tarub's curiosity got the better of him. He couldn't shake the feeling that Nawang Wulan was hiding something.
Driven by his desire to know the truth, Jaka Tarub began searching their home for answers. In a hidden compartment, he discovered a pair of magnificent wings, shimmering with otherworldly beauty. Realization struck him like a lightning bolt—Nawang Wulan was not an ordinary woman but a celestial fairy in disguise.
Filled with shock and confusion, Jaka Tarub confronted Nawang Wulan, demanding an explanation. Tearfully, she confessed her true identity and explained that she had chosen to live among humans out of her love for him. The wings, she revealed, were the source of her celestial power and connection to the heavens.
Unable to bear the weight of this revelation, Jaka Tarub made a fateful decision. He decided to take Nawang Wulan's wings and hide them, believing that by doing so, she would be bound to stay with him forever. Unbeknownst to him, this act would have dire consequences.
As soon as Nawang Wulan realized her wings were missing, a deep sorrow overcame her. She knew that without her wings, she could never return to her celestial realm. With a heavy heart, she kissed her sleeping son goodbye and, with tears streaming down her face, wore the wings that Jaka Tarub had hidden away.
Nawang Wulan ascended into the sky, her wings carrying her back to the heavens. Jaka Tarub, now alone, realized the grave mistake he had made. He was consumed by grief and regret for his actions, as he had lost his beloved wife and left their son without a mother.
From that day forward, Jaka Tarub lived a solitary life, haunted by the memory of his lost love. The story of Jaka Tarub and Nawang Wulan became a cautionary tale, a reminder of the consequences of curiosity and the boundaries that separate mortal and divine realms.
And so, the legend of Jaka Tarub and Nawang Wulan lives on, passed down through generations as a timeless tale of love, loss, and the longing for what lies beyond the realms of mortals.
